Renewable Energy Capacity on Track to Overtake Natural Gas Within a Year

According to new data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and reviewed by the SUN DAY Campaign, renewable energy's installed capacity is projected to surpass that of natural gas by summer 2027 or sooner. This milestone is driven by a projected addition of approximately 82.9 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable and battery storage capacity by June 30, 2027, while total fossil fuel and nuclear capacity are expected to decline by nearly 3.1 GW.

During the first half of 2026, electricity generated from renewables grew by 10.9% compared to the same period in 2025, led by utility-scale solar (up 21.6%), small-scale solar (up 13.0%), hydropower (up 10.1%), and wind (up 6.5%). In contrast, nuclear and natural gas generation grew by only 1.7% and 1.8%, respectively, while coal generation fell by 11.3%. Including an estimated 6,000 MW of new small-scale solar, total renewable capacity could reach approximately 546,219.4 MW, surpassing natural gas capacity of 518,286.3 MW. Battery storage is expected to grow by over 44% to 74,454.1 MW. This means that the combination of utility-scale renewables and storage will provide over 76 GW of new clean energy capacity by early summer 2027.
